Beck's music in his own words
'Elekra''Cheaper by the Dozen''The Hangover''Percy Jackson & The Olympians'Daily Variety chose 10 of Christophe Beck's most popular, notable or challenging films and asked him to reflect on the experience:"Under the Tuscan Sun" (2003)"A movie made by Audrey Wells, one of my favorite filmmakers. I loved being able to combine Italian flavors, Nino Rota-esque, in a more minimalist, colorful, modern context.""Cheaper By the Dozen" (2003)"Possibly the first film where I had to rewrite a cue over and over again. It was the critical, big cue at the end. I think it was version 12 or 14 by the time we finished. A real feeling of accomplishment and triumph.""Elektra" (2005)"One of the first movies where I was able to conceive and execute a high concept that I'm still very proud of. I did a day of sessions with the orchestra, then put them into my software and manipulated that. If you listen to that score, you can actually hear the original recording sliced and diced and combined with a real orchestra on top of it.""The Pink Panther" (2006)"I remember how much fun it was working with Henry Mancini's theme. Mancini's 'Pink Panther' scores were more episodic; he didn't work the theme in to the extent that I did. It was really great being able to run with that theme and do a bunch of variations on it.""We Are Marshall" (2006)"Most of the time, these days, there aren't too many surprises when I get to the scoring stage. Maybe it's the way the mock-ups were, but when I heard that first big sports-action cue, it was like, 'Whoa! I never imagined it would sound quite as glorious as this.'""The Hangover" (2009)"I wanted the score to sound like a record, in terms of production -- like instrumental versions of the songs that were in the soundtrack. So we recorded the drums and guitar a little differently. There's very little score in 'The Hangover.' If you tried to do too much, you would wear down the ear with that kind of (rock) sound.""Percy Jackson & The Olympians" (2010)The Lightning Thief" (2010): "Amazing fun, being able to write a grand, epic orchestral adventure score, the likes of which I had been listening to and enjoying since I was a kid.""Waiting for Superman" (2010)"My first experience working on a documentary, and my first sometimes feeling like I needed to take a shower after writing a cue -- because of the difference between manipulating emotions over something that's real, and doing it in a purely fictional context.""Red" (2010)"The craziest production situation I've ever been in. I had four weeks to turn around 80 minutes of score that was not simple. Every cue had orchestra, drums, guitars, bass, synth. I like being in a scenario where you're part of a team and you're trying to do something crazy.""Crazy Stupid Love" (2011)"I worked with filmmakers who challenged me to go outside of my comfort zone. I normally will mock up my ideas and invite filmmakers to come over and play it for them. By the second meeting, the directors were saying, 'Where are the musicians?' So we brought in seven or eight guys, once a week for four weeks, and they really appreciated it."BILLION-DOLLAR COMPOSER: CHRISTOPHE BECK Beck's green phase | Resurrecting 'Muppets' in Disney tradition | Dawn of the undead | Beck's music in his own words | Beck, private school grad, gives back Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Are You Able To Guess the Stock Music Signal Utilized in the brand new Trailer for 'Hugo'?
.publish-content img Following a discharge of the Harold Lloyd-inspired new poster for 'Hugo,' Vital has unfurled a brandname-new trailer for that approaching Martin Scorsese film, which removes probably the most questionable facets of the first advertising campaign: the thirty seconds to Mars song "Nobleman & Queens." What's that appealing -- although period of time inappropriate selection -- been changed with around the trailer soundtrack? Hint: it is a stock music signal that you simply heard inside a trailer for just one of 2010's Best Picture nominees. It's from 'The Fighter'! The song is really known as "Breath and Existence" through the stock music company Audiomachine, which is an expert in trailer music. (Audiomachine continues to be featured in trailers for 'Harry Potter,' 'Rise from the Planet from the Apes,' 'Warrior,' 'Captain America' and several, a lot more.) Julia X
A Dixie Theatrical Corp. production. Produced by Greg Hall, P.J. Pettiette, Claudie Viguerie. Directed by P.J. Pettiette. Screenplay, Matt Cunningham, Pettiette. With: Kevin Sorbo, Valerie Azlynn, Joel David Moore, Alicia Leigh Willis, Courtney Rawls, Ving Rhames.Self-conscious snark gets you only so far when you're making a semi-satirical slasher pic, even when there are cheap 3D shocks to exploit, and "Julia X" pretty much defines the extent of what a film can offer with such a limited bag of tricks. Helmer P.J. Pettiette strives mightily to elevate a strenuously unfunny clash between rival serial killers to the level of outrageous, even transgressive black comedy. But only genre fans impatient to see Kevin Sorbo cast against type as a smooth-talking psycho will care to catch the pic before it reaches 2D homevid. Sorbo sustains an air of wink-wink bemusement as an irresistible nutjob fond of trolling the Internet for lovely victims to wine and dine, then torture and slay. Indeed, he maintains his sassy sangfroid even after he's trapped by an equally deranged beauty (Valerie Azlynn) and her flakier sister (Alicia Leigh Willis). Unfortunately, even as the mayhem escalates, "Julia X" remains a promising premise in search of a satisfying execution. Thanks to 3D, various objects periodically appear to jut out from the screen. But that doesn't help.Camera (color, 3D), Jason Goodman; editor, Rob Neal; music supervisor, Mason Cooper; production designer, Mark Tanner. Reviewed at Fantastic Fest, Austin, Sept. 25, 2011. 'Grey's Anatomy's' Kevin McKidd Talks Owen and Cristina
Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) have observed their share of pros and cons on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy."He fought with Publish distressing stress disorder. She fought concentrating on the same following a hospital shooting that traumatized everyone that introduced for his or her quickie marriage. To convey the happy couple has issues is a serious understatement, especially considering it was not until after Cristina was pregnant and planning by having an abortion they a substantial discussion about getting children. Now, Owen and Cristina is constantly on the tiptoe around their issues but since the actor and director from the week's episode notifies "The Hollywood Reporter" their problems may ultimately get together together. "I don't think there's extended to attend simply because they have blown a good deal beneath the carpet this season,In . according to him.InchTHR" taken track of McKidd to talk about when and the way the happy couple will confront their problems, if there might be a contract and whether Cristina could ever realize that there's more to existence than her career.THR: How extended will Cristina and Owen still avoid facing their problems? McKidd:Which will keep coming back. Around midseason, In my opinion, something may happen some hay will break the camel's back plus they are really gonna need to deal with it. I'm unsure just what the outcome will most likely be, however think it'll be pretty explosive. I don't think there's extended to attend simply because they have blown a good deal beneath the carpet this season. I don't think people will have to wait extended to look for the fallout from that.THR: Will Owen eventually confront Cristina or is it remaining from speaking since they love each other? McKidd: In my opinion because of this they're doing it, since they deeply love each other. The problem they have is always that they have different sights on children. In my opinion they'll both eventually are afflicted by each other. There's a sizable component that happens medically inside the hospital that becomes the catalyst with this particular, it's a very intense event that happens. In my opinion that weighs in at in at on him and lastly that becomes the catalyst on the account facing each other while using truth.THR: Might be one's heart of Owen and Cristina's problems the abortion or possibly could it be a little more about bigger issues like communication together with a shared vision from the products a relationship is? McKidd: It's all regulated controlled of people things folded into one. They're getting to some degree where there's inside a fork inside the road and they will have to really decide what they're prone to do, whether they'd like to reconcile all people things or else. In my opinion they have desire for each other but that's not necessarily enough in the relationship. In my opinion there's apt to be some dark occasions ahead on the account and it will test whether they'd like to survive.THR: Will Owen eventually use Richard or Derek about his feelings about Cristina's abortion? McKidd: He and Derek are really starting to bond over a number of things. The fact Derek experienced a time period of being chief turns into a significant large support for Owen after we move ahead. They are much more equals now inside the hospital, to enable them to communicate virtually. In my opinion he'll become installed on him.THR: Will being the primary impact Owen's marriage? McKidd: That's one of the tales we're telling over the following handful of episodes: there's this huge medical situation that happens which he will need hard options as chief and hang all of your personal feelings aside. There's something which happens that will really put more pressure than usual on Cristina and Owen together with other co-employees. He's out of the blue in this position of one's and requiring to try and navigate that, he doesn't comprehend it correctly constantly. So yes, absolutely.THR: With Owen's career thriving and Cristina's somewhat stumbling, will Cristina eventually realize that there's more to existence than her career? McKidd: I am unsure, maybe! Who knows. People do change. Maybe that's just her. Maybe that isn't likely to change on her behalf and possibly this is actually the point. This can be a story which has not necessarily learned before. Usually on tv shows eventually they are offered around but you will discover varying people in the world and it may be naive individuals to consider they do not exist. In my opinion it is really an interesting story itself and I am unsure the reaction to that question.THR: Maybe there is a contract if this involves their different ideas about family and youngsters? McKidd: Sure, absolutely. I don't go to whichever reason not it might be a difficult one. However can't go to whichever reason there cannot be. Each of them have to be happy or there's pointless for ongoing which is the same in anybody's relationship. What that seems like that's what they're saying about people in associations nowadays: you may never really tell precisely what rapport is really like nowadays even if you believe you understand a couple of really completely, you may never really tell how it is making that relationship tick. Cristina and Owen are interesting, odd, effective, passionate people with very good ideas about existence, so that it bakes an excellent story to see together with a great journey being on. What that seems like, In my opinion may well be more interesting than the majority of us would ever guess since they're so unique. When they could be together, In my opinion it'll be in a significant unique way they formerly live in a firehouse! (Laughs.)THR: The way in which Owen aspect in in what Derek is utilizing Zola? Watching Owen with Zola as well as the backdrop of Cristian's abortion is heartbreaking. McKidd: In my opinion everything does weigh lower on Owen a good deal. The fact there's this cute little baby toddler around, it's a constant indication to him. But yeah, it won't be feasible for Owen which is certainly a hardship on Derek and Meredith to own Owen inside the shadows with this particular longing. THR: Will Owen end up helping Derek and Meredith using what they're utilizing Zola? McKidd: We're on Episode 9 at this time which he certainly talks and tries to be there for Derek. Meredith and Owen haven't had most likely probably the most warm and cozy-up relationship more often than not there's been a lot of hysteria between each of them if the involves Cristina. Certainly In my opinion Owen will there be for Derek very much the same that Derek will there be for Owen. Owen tries to become good friend and 2 ears for Derek in what he's coping with. Bradley Cooper To Be Man From UNCLE?
Warners' top choice to replace ClooneySteven Soderbergh's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. might have recently lost George Clooney (if they ever actually had him), but it's looking as if his replacement may already have arrived. Variety are reporting that Warners have offered Bradley Cooper the role of the devastatingly suave Napoleon Solo.Robert Vaughn played Solo in thelight-hearted spy series that ran for 105 episodes between 1964 and 1968, opposite David McCallum as the intense Russian Illya Kuryakin. U.N.C.L.E. was an international intelligence agency: the United Network Command for Law Enforcement. Their chief antagonists were the agents of T.H.R.U.S.H.: the Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (although that acronym was never actually revealed in the series: it's a retcon from the spinoff novels). The series spawned a sister inThe Girl From U.N.C.L.E., several cinema releases of expanded TV episodes, and a reunion TV movie in 1983.Clooney had long been mooted for the film - one of Soderbergh's allegedly final projects - but his loss hasn't affected Warners' plans for a start-date of February next year. Soderbergh is planning a fun affair with a period 60s setting, and the writer is Scott Z Burns (Contagion, The Informant!). Cooper has yet to finally sign, but we're thinking some stylish spycraft might be an attractive change-up after the celestial battle shenanigans of Alex Proyas' Paradise Lost, where he's playing fallen angel Lucifer.Burns enthused recently to Coming Soon that "U.N.C.L.E. was a really incredibly progressive, hopeful kind of show... I think we can do some really cool stuff, shooting those cars and that fashion and that aesthetic with today's cameras and technology..."Soderbergh's Contagion is out now.

Attila Dory/Sony Pictures Classics The 15th annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Film Awards, presented by Starz Entertainment, will honor Academy Award nominee Bennett Miller with its 2011 Hollywood Director Award. Weekend Movie Preview: 'Footloose' Hopes to Dance Away With Weekend Crown
Such is the state of Hollywood when not one, but two remakes of beloved '80s classics open on the same weekend. The surprise is that one of them is actually apparently awesome (and it's not 'The Thing'). Can 'Footloose' cut the competition down or will Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson fly away with the weekend crown? The answers lie ahead in your Weekend Movie Preview NATIONWIDE RELEASES 'Footloose' What's the story: A Boston teen named Ren (newcomer Kenny Wormald) moves to a small Midwestern town where dancing has been outlawed. There, he falls in love with the rebellious teen daughter (Julianne Hough) of the town preacher (Dennis Quaid), and teaches everyone how to... cut loose. (Groan!) (But seriously.) Box-office projection: Your friendly Moviefone editors are totally in the tank for the new version of 'Footloose,' but will audiences be too? Perhaps. The marketing for 'Footloose' has been squarely aimed at the MTV generation (or is that now the Spotify generation?), making the film look like the perfect combination of sexy and dangerous. Even more important? The Craig Brewer-directed film has gotten fairly outstanding reviews from critics, something which might persuade fans of the original to show up alongside their sons, daughters, nieces and nephews. With little competition from new releases and 'Real Steel' showing itself as a family film, 'Footloose' could also be the destination of choice for couples. Projections are in the $18-to-$20 million range, but the guess here is that 'Footloose' dances away with a bit more. $23.4 million [Showtimes & Tickets | Mr. Moviefone's Six-Second Review] 'The Thing'] What's the story: A prequel to the John Carpenter classic, 'The Thing' focuses on a the discovery of an alien ship (and a shape-shifting alien) at an Antarctica research site. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers 4eva!), Joel Edgerton and Eric Christian Olsen star. Box-office projection: On the one hand, no one is really talking about 'The Thing' unless it's to slag the film for being a sacrilegious remake of Carpenter's classic. On the other hand: scares and aliens! There's an audience for this film, one that has seen few horror flicks since August that they can rally around. 'The Thing' isn't that film either -- check back next week for 'Paranormal Activity 3,' which should explode the somewhat stagnant box office -- but since it has the name value that something like 'Shark Night 3D' didn't, expect respectable and unspectacular numbers. $10.1 million [Showtimes & Tickets | Mr. Moviefone's Six-Second Review] 'The Big Year' What's the story: Three friends (Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson) compete in the Big Year, an annual bird-watching event that sends them on adventures to identify rare species of birds around the country. Directed by David Frankel ('Marley & Me'), 'The Big Year' also stars Rashida Jones, Angelica Huston, Rosamund Pike, Dianne Wiest and more. Box-office projection: And you thought no one was talking about 'The Thing'! With three major comedy stars as leads, logic dictates that 'The Big Year' should currently dominate weekend movie talk. That it's not is a potential box-office problem. The film is opening in a little over 2,100 theaters -- the lowest number of any wide release this weekend -- and projections have it landing in the $6-to-$7 million range. That would rank as lowest wide-release opening since 'Mixed Nuts' in 1994. Let's give Martin, Black and Wilson the benefit of the doubt and assume the PG rating will bring in a few more families than tracking indicates. $9.2 million [Showtimes & Tickets | Mr. Moviefone's Six-Second Review] LIMITED RELEASES How the mighty have fallen? Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman lead 'Trespass', which is only opening in 10 theaters.
